Destroying Precious Land for Gas
The Story.
I came across an article in the NY times that I knew I had to rave about. After reading the article and realizing it was written by Sean Lennon, son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, I was surprised to see such a powerful voice writing about such a controversial topic. Lennon describes his hometown on the northern tip of Delaware County, New York. He writes how beautiful his parents farm is located "where the Catskill Mountains curl up into little kitten hills, and Ouleout Creek slithers north into the Susquehanna River."
Lennon tells the story of how he recently attended a town meeting where local gas company officials were interested in tearing down the towns beautiful wilderness for a pipeline that would be used for hydraulic fracturing. He describes the fury of many of the towns farmers and the carelessness of these gas companies. After researching the many disastrous effects that fracking had on the air quality, landscapes, wilderness and even drinking water of Pennsylvania, Lennon described his astonishment and how he knew he could not let this happen to his beautiful hometown.
Lennon's fury at the thought of these gas companies tearing through wilderness for natural gas is pronounced throughout the article. He describes how many of the companies describe natural gas as being "clean energy," which he knows is the farthest thing from true. Fracking is not clean whatsoever and even releases a numerous amount of toxic chemicals into the air including methane, uranium, and radium. Lennon writes, "Don't be fooled... It inevitably leaks toxic chemicals into the air and water. Industry studies show that 5 percent of wells can leak immediately, and 60 percent over 30 years."
Gas produced this way is not environmentally or climate friendly and with the amount of methane leaking into our air and our environment it is just as damaging as coal is on our climate. Lennon describes how even burning a small portion can cause unstable coastlines and unlivable climate conditions for future generations to come,.

My View.
This article truly interpreted the hidden destruction that most major gas companies will hide from the world for as long as possible. Our planet has so many beautiful places, that sooner or later will be destroyed, all out of corporations greed for money and power. The beautiful landscapes that we see every day were not made to be drilled into with giant machines, or destroyed for the building of pipelines.
Gas companies have become so involved in the industry and the money they are making, that they forget how disastrous their effects are on our planet. It angers me that these huge corporations will cause major damage to the environment in order to make a profit. These companies will lie their way into the publics mind to make them believe that they are not causing enough damage to harm our environment. But the truth? The real effects that they are not telling the public about will be seen for generations after generations.
It is astonishing to me how poorly many of these companies are treating the ONLY planet that we have to live on. That's right. Did they forget that we only have one planet? Sometimes it seems that way with the toxic substances that are being released into the air as well as the destruction they are causing to our environment.
We have such a beautiful planet that not many people will be able to fully experience, and that opportunity will certainly be taken away from future generations if we keep treating our planet so poorly. Instead of destroying land, we should be preserving and protecting it so that future generations can enjoy its beauty just as much as we do.
