Traveling to Change Your Mindset
The Story.
I had recently stumbled upon an article written by Brook Silva-Braga for the April 2007 issue of Budget Travel. The author describes how he left his job as a TV producer and his big Manhattan apartment to take a trip around the world that would last a year. Brook was 25 when he made the decision, despite those who tried to convince him that he was crazy. It took him until he was 10,000 miles away to realize that he was truly alone.
Eventually he began meeting people who were traveling as well, and began bonding with strangers. Brook describes how stress-free it was to wake up and discuss among his roommates the plans for the day over breakfast. He writes about his adventures with people he had only met the day prior, and how unforgettable they were.
Brook describes that vacations and traveling are extraordinarily different. He writes, “Vacations are all about destinations, but my trip was about people. The places were just backdrops. When everyone asks me now—as everyone does—what my favorite place was, they can’t understand that, in a way, it was all the same place. The temperature and language and time zone may have changed, but it was all part of one experience."
Brook describes the risks he took just to make memories in each country, and how everything always seemed to work out in the end. He argues the relationship between traveling and dangerous drugs; the high was equivalent to traveling and all of the experiences and the doors it opened for him, and the low was equivalent to coming home. Brook explains that traveling allows you to view things in a new perspective; you begin to see everything in a different light.

My View.
This article allowed me to get an inside perspective on what it’s like to travel without a worry in the world. I really enjoyed reading Brook's writing and it even inspired my interest to hopefully travel the world. The author beautifully described his experiences and thoughts while traveling.
I agree with the Brook’s view on traveling and how you begin to see things in a new perspective. After only moving from one state to another, I have witnessed how coming out of your comfort zone and into a new surrounding can completely change your perspective on everything you had once believed in.
The author discusses how he left his job and apartment behind to travel the world for one year. It is truly inspiring how someone can simply “press pause” on their life and catch the next flight to a foreign country. It is incredible reading about how the author dropped everything to finally do something for himself and to explore new surroundings. He describes how stress-free the experience was and this was definitely one of his strongest arguments.
His friends and family viewed him as crazy because they felt like he was giving up. But after all, he was chasing after something that, in the end, would come to mean a lot more to him than a good job and a nice apartment. Even if people view his actions as crazy or irrational, he decided to finally do something for himself and that is something that everyone should respect. Brook’s entire trip was an experience of a lifetime with stories and memories he will carry around with him forever, and that is something I think more people need to appreciate.
This article completely changed my perspective on traveling. I had always viewed the idea of traveling around the world as an amazing experience built by memories that will last a lifetime. And while that is true, this article shows just how leaving your comfort zone and doing something risky and unexpected can change your view on life altogether.
